There are two types of gallstones, namely cholesterol stones and pigment stones. Cholesterol stones are formed when the bile contains excess of cholesterol and bilirubin and lacks bile salts. Pigment stones are caused due to cirrhosis, biliary tract infections or blood disorders such as anemia, all of which cause surplus bilirubin to be formed. There are also other factors like diabetes, obesity, rapid weight loss, pregnancy, fasting, taking birth control pills etc. that may lead to the formation of gallstones.
